Bay Hill is a community on both sides of Apopka-Vineland Road in southwest Orange County, between Windermere and Lake Buena Vista, in the Dr. Phillips area. It grew up around the Bay Hill Club and Lodge, whose course opened in 1961. Arnold Palmer leased the club in 1970 and took ownership in the mid-1970s, and it has hosted a PGA Tour event since 1979, now the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The community sits along the Butler Chain of Lakes, with lakefront and golf course homes on winding streets.

The Club and the Property Owners Association

The Bay Hill Club and Lodge is a private, non-equity club owned and operated by the Palmer family. Club membership is separate from owning a home. Homeowners belong to the Bay Hill Property Owners Association, which reviews exterior changes such as painting, roofing and fencing and arranges off-duty police patrols. Some sections, such as Bay Point of Bay Hill and the Marina Condominiums at Bay Hill, have their own associations as well, so ask for every set of documents that applies to the home.

The Butler Chain of Lakes

Bay Hill sits along the Butler Chain of Lakes, 13 connected lakes covering more than 5,000 acres, including Lake Tibet and Lake Sheen. In 1985 the chain became the first lake system in Florida designated Outstanding Florida Waters. Water access, docks and boat lifts vary by home, so confirm what each property includes. The Tibet-Butler Preserve nearby has a nature center and about 3.6 miles of trails.

Schools

Most of Bay Hill is zoned for Dr. Phillips Elementary, Southwest Middle and Dr. Phillips High, with some sections zoned to Bay Meadows, Palm Lake or Windermere elementary schools or Chain of Lakes Middle. Confirm any address with Orange County Public Schools.

Getting Around

Without traffic, approximate drive times are about 10 to 15 minutes to Universal, 15 to 20 minutes to Disney Springs, about 25 minutes to downtown Orlando and the Magic Kingdom, and about 35 minutes to Orlando International Airport. Sand Lake Road and Apopka-Vineland Road carry heavy traffic at peak times.

On a lakefront home, check the flood zone, the seawall or shoreline, and any dock permits. On older homes, ask about roof, plumbing and electrical updates.
